This poem is one that I wrote for my niece/cousin's wedding this Spring. I love her to pieces and I'm wishing their budding family a lifetime of love, prosperity, and joy.
As spring starts to dance
And the sweet smell of honeysuckle hangs on the breezes of May
Our love takes shape
In the brilliant early light of a brand new day
All around us, in kaleidoscopic colors and dance moves so fluid
Are infinite reasons to be in love
And infinite lessons on how to do it
—
Like love, springtime covers us in showers, washing away the things that died
The broken bits that needed mending
And the pieces of ourselves we let hide
Then the cold starts to break
Cloudy days that comforted idle minds and hearts
Begin to peel away
And in the mineral-rich soil left behind
We plant the seeds of our love
Watering them with honesty, respect, and promises to be kind
On the heels of April, the days stretch on and the sun lingers in the sky
Slowly drifting out of sight
As if lamenting the thought of having to say goodbye
Only to race against time to return once more
Much the same way my heart rushes to be back with yours
In the sunlight of spring
Birds chirp their songs, and flowers cover every inch of the ground
Filling our lives with laughter and joy
Oh, to be in love
I’ve never heard so pure a sound
Spring demands long days and heated nights
Mornings that show us the truth of who we are
And in the purple light of dusk
We paint portraits of our love on the canvas of the stars
Like butterflies we bare witness to the different versions of ourselves
And I hope for endless springs with each other
As friends, muses, partners
Self-portraits in soft pastels
And when the clouds return
As they are bound to do
Know that my heart will always yearn
To spend rainy days with you
Spring has come and so too has the time to say
That if music be the food of love
Give me excess of it
And hold me close in a tender sway
—
All around us, in kaleidoscopic colors and dance moves so fluid
Are infinite reasons to be in love
And infinite lessons on how to do it
As plants shed the old to make room for the new
Let this love be the fertile earth, a soft landing for me and you
To metamorphosize into brand new beings
To write love songs and create words with brand new meanings
Let our love always return to the spring
To bloom in full view of the world
A marvelous, golden-edged thing
A fluttering bee waiting for the sunflower’s petals to unfurl
